Statement of Attainment — Trade Qualification (issued by RTO post-assessment)

An AQF certification document issued by a nationally registered RTO to certify that a learner has successfully completed one or more units of competency (or an accredited short course) from a VET qualification, without completing the full qualification.

Issuing authority

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2025 and the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)

Official source

asqa.gov.au

Cost

Free (the Statement of Attainment itself is included in RTO training fees; no separate government fee for the document)

Deadline

Must be issued by the RTO within 30 calendar days of the assessment date (subject to all fees being paid)

How to apply

  1. Enrol with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that is registered with ASQA and is approved to deliver the relevant unit(s) of competency or accredited short course — verify the RTO's current registration on the National Register of VET (training.gov.au).
  2. Provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) to the RTO before assessment; if you do not have one, apply at usi.gov.au — the RTO cannot legally issue a Statement of Attainment without a verified USI unless a specific exemption applies.
  3. Complete the required learning and training activities for the unit(s) of competency with the RTO, which may include theory assessments, practical demonstrations, workplace observations, or portfolios.
  4. Undergo formal assessment by the RTO against the unit(s) of competency as specified in the relevant Training Package; the assessor determines competency (C = Competent, NYC = Not Yet Competent).
  5. Ensure all agreed training fees are paid to the RTO — the RTO must issue the Statement of Attainment within 30 calendar days of the assessment date once fees are settled.
  6. Receive your Statement of Attainment document, which must include: the RTO's name and ASQA registration number; the words 'Statement of Attainment'; a full list of the units of competency or modules achieved with their national codes; the learner's full legal name; date of issue; and authorised signatory.
  7. Use the Statement of Attainment as evidence of partial qualification completion for: applying for trade licences (e.g. HRWL, plumbing, electrical), RPL applications for full qualifications, employment screening, or further training credit transfer.
  8. If the Statement of Attainment was lost, damaged or issued incorrectly, contact the issuing RTO first; if the RTO has closed, contact ASQA or the relevant state VET regulator to locate your training records.
