How to apply

  1. Check your eligibility at vic.gov.au/check-your-eligibility-for-skills-first-funding — you must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen physically present in Victoria.
  2. Search for a Skills First-funded course using the Victorian Skills Gateway at skills.vic.gov.au.
  3. Contact your chosen Skills First approved training provider (TAFE or private RTO) to confirm the course is available with a government subsidy.
  4. Provide the training provider with evidence of your citizenship/residency status and any relevant study history (e.g., prior government-funded courses).
  5. Complete the provider's enrolment form and the Skills First Student Eligibility Declaration, which is held by the RTO — the provider's authorised delegate countersigns to confirm your eligibility has been verified.
  6. Obtain your Unique Student Identifier (USI) at usi.gov.au if you do not already have one — this is required before enrolment is finalised.
  7. Confirm your course fee with the provider (fees vary; concession rates apply for Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card, or Veteran's Gold Card holders; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students access training tuition-free).
  8. Begin training — you may undertake a maximum of two Skills First courses at a time, and no more than two in a single calendar year.
