How to apply

1. Confirm you meet eligibility requirements: minimum four years full-time higher education including an accredited teacher education program, Australian work rights (citizen, permanent resident, or visa holder), and current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration.
2. If any part of your teaching qualification was completed outside Australia, NZ, UK, Ireland, USA, or Canada, obtain approved English language test results (IELTS or ISLPR from within the past two years).
3. Create an account on the TQI Portal at portal.tqi.act.edu.au.
4. Submit an Application for Teacher Registration through the TQI Portal, including all required supporting documents: colour PDF scans of academic transcripts, Statement of Teaching Service, 100 points of ID (at least one Group A document), WWVP registration proof, and work rights evidence.
5. Pay the application fee at time of submission (fee is on a sliding scale depending on when in the calendar year you apply; annual renewal fee is $115; early childhood teachers may be eligible for a fee waiver).
6. TQI aims to assess standard applications within 10 working days; overseas qualification assessments may take longer.
7. Once approved, your registration is recorded and you may teach in ACT schools — note that teaching without registration or approval to teach is prohibited even while your application is pending.
8. Renew registration annually by paying the $115 renewal fee and meeting the Maintaining Registration requirements (professional learning, currency of practice).
