How to apply

  1. Confirm eligibility: you must be aged 45–74 and enrolled in Medicare — no referral required.
  2. If aged 50–74, a free test kit will be mailed to you automatically every two years via the National Cancer Screening Register; ensure your postal address is current.
  3. If aged 45–49, request your first free kit by calling the National Cancer Screening Register on 1800 627 701, submitting the online webform at ncsr.gov.au, or asking your GP to enrol you.
  4. When your kit arrives, read the enclosed information booklet and collect the required stool samples at home according to the instructions (samples taken on separate days).
  5. Complete the Participant Details form included in the kit, then seal and mail the samples and form to the pathology laboratory using the prepaid envelope provided.
  6. Receive results within approximately 4 weeks, sent directly to you and your nominated GP or healthcare provider.
  7. If your result is positive (blood detected), contact your GP promptly to arrange a follow-up colonoscopy — do not wait.
  8. Manage your participation at any time via the National Cancer Screening Register Participant Portal (accessed through myGov), including updating contact details, deferring your next screening round, or opting out of the program.
