How to apply
- Confirm eligibility: any woman aged 40 or over can access a free screening mammogram every two years — no referral or GP visit required; women aged 50–74 receive a postal invitation every two years.
- If you have not received an invitation or wish to book independently, call 13 20 50 (the national BreastScreen booking line) which connects you to your nearest state or territory service at local call cost.
- Alternatively, book directly with your state or territory BreastScreen service online — major services include BreastScreen Victoria (breastscreen.org.au), BreastScreen NSW (breastscreen.nsw.gov.au), BreastScreen WA (breastscreen.health.wa.gov.au), and BreastScreen SA (breastscreen.sa.gov.au).
- At your appointment, two low-dose mammogram X-rays are taken of each breast by a female radiographer; the screening takes approximately 10–15 minutes.
- Results are mailed to you within 2 weeks; your GP is also notified if you consent.
- If results require follow-up, the BreastScreen service will contact you to arrange further assessment at an assessment clinic — this is included in the program at no cost.
- To remain on the recall list, ensure your contact details are current with your state BreastScreen service; you can update them by calling 13 20 50 or via your state service's website.
