WOVR Written-Off Vehicle Register Check and Reregistration Application

Form number: Form 45071564 (NSW TfNSW — Application to repair a written-off light vehicle); VL17 (Transport WA — Application to license a written-off vehicle)

The Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR) is the national database distinguishing repairable write-offs (which can potentially be re-registered after repair and inspection) from statutory write-offs (permanently de-registered); consumers check it before buying a used vehicle and owners of repairable write-offs apply through their state road authority to have the vehicle re-registered.

Issuing authority

State and territory road authorities (TfNSW, VicRoads/Transport Victoria, TMR QLD, DPTI SA, Transport WA, NT MVR, ACT Access Canberra, ITAS TAS) via NEVDIS national data-link administered by Austroads

Official source

nsw.gov.au

Cost

PPSR check: $2. Re-registration inspection fees vary by state — QLD WOVI inspection approx. $484.45; NSW VIIU fee applies; VIC VIV inspection fee applies; WA and SA approved provider fees vary. Standard registration costs also apply.

How to apply

  1. Check WOVR status before purchasing any used vehicle by running a PPSR search at ppsr.gov.au for $2 — the search includes NEVDIS data showing whether the VIN is listed as a statutory write-off, repairable write-off, or stolen.
  2. Confirm write-off category: statutory write-offs cannot be re-registered in any Australian jurisdiction; repairable write-offs may be eligible for re-registration subject to state-specific criteria.
  3. If you own a repairable write-off and wish to re-register it, confirm eligibility with your state road authority — in NSW, the applicant must have been the registered operator for 28+ days before damage (or be an heir); other states have differing criteria.
  4. Obtain state-specific authorisation before commencing repairs — in NSW, submit Form 45071564 (Application to Repair a Written-Off Light Vehicle) to Transport for NSW with a Declaration of Vehicle Damage completed by an assessor.
  5. Complete all repairs using a licensed repairer; obtain a Certificate of Compliance or maintain a detailed Repair Diary (required in SA and other states) with receipts, invoices, and photographic evidence throughout.
  6. Book and pass a Vehicle Identity and Roadworthiness Inspection (called AUVIS+VIIU in NSW, VIV Inspection in VIC, WOVI inspection in QLD at $484.45, or equivalent in your state) — this certifies the vehicle's identity and repair quality.
  7. Submit the completed registration application, inspection certificates, Certificate of Compliance, proof of identity, and applicable fees at your state road authority service centre.
  8. Note that re-registered write-off vehicles will be permanently noted on their Certificate of Registration and remain visible on PPSR/NEVDIS searches.
