How to apply
- Join a VicRoads-recognised (VIC) or Transport-recognised (NSW/QLD/SA/WA) historic vehicle club — membership of an approved club is a mandatory prerequisite in all states.
- Confirm vehicle eligibility: in VIC, vehicles must be veteran (pre-1919), vintage (1919–1930), or classic/historic (25+ years old with rolling cut-off); NSW requires 30+ years old and as-close-to-original condition; other states have similar age thresholds.
- In VIC: obtain and complete the 'Vehicle Eligibility and Standards Declaration' form (signed by a club official) and the 'Club Permit Application' form — you have 30 days from the date on the eligibility declaration to submit the permit application.
- In NSW: complete Form 1259 Historic Vehicle Declaration, signed by an official of your recognised historic vehicle club, and submit in person at a Service NSW Centre.
- In QLD, SA, WA: contact your state road authority or approved club for the equivalent conditional/concessional registration application form and club endorsement process.
- Submit your application with supporting documents (club membership evidence, vehicle identity documents, roadworthy/safety certificate as required) and pay the applicable fee at your state road authority service centre or online.
- Receive your club permit or conditional registration label/logbook — in VIC, choose either the 45-day or 90-day permit option; record trips in your logbook whenever the vehicle moves more than 100 metres from its garage address.
- Renew annually; note that vehicles may be driven interstate provided they comply with the issuing state's permit conditions.
