How to apply

1. Check your current visa's travel entitlement using VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) at border.gov.au to confirm your travel facility has expired or is about to expire.
2. Determine which subclass applies: Subclass 155 (up to 5 years) requires at least 2 years of physical residence in Australia in the last 5 years, or substantial business, cultural or personal ties; Subclass 157 (3 months) applies if you have compelling and compassionate reasons but do not meet Subclass 155 criteria.
3. Apply online via ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au — the system automatically assesses you for both subclass 155 and 157 based on your answers (preferred method, lower fee).
4. Alternatively, download and complete Form 1085 (Resident Return Visa application) from the Department of Home Affairs website for a paper application.
5. Gather supporting documents: current passport, evidence of permanent residence, proof of time spent in Australia (e.g. travel history, employment records, lease agreements), and evidence of substantial Australian ties if relevant.
6. Pay the application fee: AUD $490 (online) or AUD $570 (paper). Additional fees may apply for health and character checks if required.
7. Lodge the completed Form 1085 by post to the nearest Australian visa office, or submit the online application through ImmiAccount.
8. Await a decision — 50% of applications are decided within 1 day online; paper applications typically take 4–8 weeks.
9. Once granted, ensure you travel to Australia within the validity period of the new RRV travel facility.
