Varies by state (approx. $50–$250 depending on state and licence class/duration)
Deadline
Must convert within 3 months of arriving in NSW (6 months in VIC/TAS; varies by state)
How to apply
- Check your state's grace period — NSW allows 3 months, VIC and TAS allow 6 months of driving on your overseas licence before conversion is required
- Determine whether your country of issue is on the recognised-country list for your state (as of 2026, the Experienced Driver Recognition direct-swap pathway has been removed across all states; a knowledge test and practical driving test are now required for most applicants)
- Download and complete the Licence Application form (Form 1001 in NSW; equivalent in other states) from your state transport website
- Gather required documents: original overseas licence (not a photocopy), NAATI-certified English translation if the licence is not in English, proof of identity, proof of Australian residency, and a licence validation letter from the issuing country if required
- Book and pass the relevant knowledge test (road rules) at your state licensing centre if required
- Book and pass a practical driving test if required by your state
- Visit a Service NSW centre, VicRoads office, TMR service centre, or equivalent state office in person with all documents and payment
- Have your photo taken and pay the applicable licence fee
- Receive your Australian licence card by mail (interim receipt issued same day)
