Issued to Australian licence holders travelling overseas, the International Driving Permit (IDP) is an officially recognised document that translates your Australian driver licence details into multiple languages and is required or strongly recommended in most overseas countries.

How to apply
- Confirm eligibility: you must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid provisional or full Australian driver licence (learner licences are not eligible)
- Choose your state motoring club: NRMA (NSW/ACT), RACV (VIC), RACQ (QLD), RAA (SA), RAC (WA), RACT (TAS), or AANT (NT)
- Apply online via your state club's website (e.g. mynrma.com.au/travel/international-driving-permits for NSW, idp.racq.com.au for QLD) or download the AAA IDP Application Form and apply in person at a club store
- Upload or provide a digital passport-style photo and a scan or photo of both sides of your current Australian driver licence
- Pay the application fee of $53 AUD (postage of approx. $11.40 extra if mailing; in-store pickup is available at selected locations)
- For urgent same-day issuance (travelling within 48 hours), visit your state club's head office in person during business hours
- Receive your IDP by post within 3–7 business days (metro), or collect in-store at selected RACQ, NRMA or partner outlets
- Carry the IDP alongside your original Australian driver licence at all times when driving overseas — the IDP is not valid without the original licence
