How to apply
- Obtain the correct registration application form for your state: NSW — download Form 1009 (Application for Registration) from Service NSW; VIC — obtain the VicRoads Vehicle Registration Form (PDF); other states — collect the equivalent form from your state road authority's website or service centre.
- Arrange a vehicle identity inspection and safety check if required: NSW — newly manufactured vehicles with a valid RAV (Register of Approved Vehicles) entry under two years old are exempt from an AUVIS (blue slip); older or individually constructed vehicles must obtain an AUVIS or equivalent blue/pink/yellow slip from an authorised inspection station; VIC — brand new unregistered vehicles generally do not require a roadworthy certificate.
- Obtain Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance for the vehicle before completing registration — select an approved insurer in your state.
- Gather all required supporting documents: proof of identity (driver licence or equivalent); evidence of registration entitlement (purchase invoice, import approval, compliance plate documentation, or ICV approval certificate as applicable); vehicle inspection certificate if required; and payment details.
- Complete the registration application form in full using block letters — include vehicle details (make, model, VIN/chassis number, engine number, year of manufacture), owner details, and CTP insurance information.
- Present the completed form and all supporting documents in person at your nearest service centre (Service NSW centre, VicRoads, or equivalent state office) — first-time registrations generally cannot be completed entirely online and require in-person attendance.
- Pay the applicable registration fee (varies by vehicle type, weight, and state), stamp duty on the vehicle purchase, and any other applicable levies at the time of lodgement.
- Receive your Certificate of Registration and, where applicable, number plates — affix plates as required and retain the registration certificate.
