How to apply

1. Confirm you are eligible to sponsor: you must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, aged 18 or over, and not prohibited from sponsoring (e.g., not already subject to a sponsorship bar).
2. Note the lifetime limit: you may only sponsor a maximum of two partners for migration throughout your lifetime, and must wait at least five years between sponsorships if you have previously sponsored someone.
3. Log into your ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
4. Once your partner lodges their Form 47SP application, you will be linked to the application as the sponsor and prompted to complete your sponsorship declaration (Form 40SP) online within ImmiAccount.
5. Complete all sections of Form 40SP: personal details, sponsorship history, character declaration (including any criminal history), health declaration, and financial capacity information.
6. Provide consent for the Department to communicate with your partner's migration agent if applicable.
7. Review and sign (electronically within ImmiAccount) the sponsorship declaration.
8. Upload any additional documents requested, such as evidence of your Australian citizenship or permanent residence status.
9. Submit the sponsorship declaration and retain confirmation for your records; the Department will assess sponsorship eligibility as part of the overall partner visa application.
