How to apply
- Go to usi.gov.au and select 'Create your USI' (or 'Find your USI' if you may already have one).
- Have an accepted identity document ready — options include Australian driver licence, Medicare card, Australian passport, Certificate of Registration by Descent, Citizenship Certificate, or ImmiCard.
- Optionally link your USI account to myGov for easier future access via my.gov.au.
- Enter your personal details and identity document information into the USI portal; the system verifies your identity in real time.
- Create a username and password (or use myGov/Digital ID login) and set up security questions for account recovery.
- Your USI is generated immediately and displayed on screen — record it and/or save it to your myGov account.
- To retrieve a forgotten USI, visit usi.gov.au/students/find-your-usi and use your registered email, mobile number, personal details plus security questions, or a recognised ID document.
- Provide your USI to your training organisation (RTO, TAFE, or apprenticeship provider) before or at enrolment — they cannot issue a qualification without it.
