State Aids and Equipment Program — Wheelchair and Mobility Equipment Funding

Free to $100+ co-payment depending on income and state (e.g. NSW: $100/year for pension/low-income; 20% of cost for higher-income adults)
How to apply
- Confirm the person is not currently funded for the equipment through NDIS, WorkCover, TAC, or Department of Veterans' Affairs, and meets the relevant state residency and clinical eligibility criteria.
- Obtain a referral to an occupational therapist (OT) or other qualified assistive technology prescriber for a functional assessment — the prescriber must be registered and approved by the state program.
- Attend the assessment: the prescriber evaluates functional need, trialling appropriate equipment and documenting clinical justification in an assessment report.
- Prescriber completes and submits the state program's Equipment Request Form (ERF) or equivalent — e.g. EnableNSW ERF (NSW), SWEP referral form (VIC), MASS application (QLD) — along with the client's application form and supporting documentation.
- Client (or guardian) completes and signs the general client application or consent form for the program if not previously registered.
- State program assesses the application against funding criteria and equipment guidelines — complex or high-cost equipment may require additional review or a secondary assessment.
- If approved, equipment is ordered, customised if required, and delivered or issued through an approved supplier; re-issued equipment is generally provided at no cost to the client.
- For NSW EnableNSW: co-payment of $100 per year for pension/low-income adults and children under 16; 20% co-payment for higher-income adults. Co-payments vary by state.
- For ongoing needs, equipment reviews are conducted periodically or when the client's condition changes significantly.
