Deadline

New directors must apply before being appointed. Existing directors were required to apply by 30 November 2022 (deadline passed).

How to apply

  1. Download the myID app (formerly myGovID) from the App Store or Google Play and set up at least a Standard identity strength using 2 Australian identity documents (e.g. passport, driver's licence, Medicare card, birth certificate).
  2. Gather the information you will need to verify your identity with the ATO: your individual Tax File Number (TFN) and your residential address as currently recorded with the ATO.
  3. Have answers ready for 2 of the following ATO-held document types: bank account details on ATO record, ATO notice of assessment, APRA super fund account details, dividend statement, or Centrelink payment summary.
  4. Go to abrs.gov.au, click 'Apply for your director ID' and log in using your myID email address — enter the 4-digit code shown in your browser into the myID app to authenticate.
  5. On the ABRS portal, select 'Apply for a director identification number' and confirm the statutory declarations.
  6. Enter your TFN, residential address, and the answers to the 2 identity verification questions, then submit.
  7. Your 15-digit Director ID will appear on screen immediately upon successful verification — record it securely.
  8. Provide your Director ID to the company's registered agent or company secretary so it can be recorded in the company's register.
  9. Note: existing directors were required to apply by 30 November 2022; new directors must apply before being appointed — apply before the company registration or director appointment is lodged with ASIC.
