How to apply

1. Call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737 (Monday–Friday 8am–5pm) or visit carergateway.gov.au to make initial contact and confirm eligibility as an unpaid carer.
2. A Carer Support Planner creates a client record and gathers information about your caring situation, the person you care for, your location, and your support needs.
3. Complete the Carer Star assessment — a structured conversation of approximately one hour (can span multiple calls) covering seven life domains to identify strengths, challenges, and priorities.
4. Work with the planner to set SMART goals and develop a personalised Carer Support Plan (action plan) that lists tailored services and supports.
5. The planner coordinates access to the services in your plan, which may include free counselling, online skills courses, coaching, emergency respite, planned respite, and peer support groups.
6. Receive your action plan by email or post and begin accessing the funded supports arranged by your planner.
7. Approximately six weeks after services commence, your planner checks in to review progress and adjust the plan if your circumstances or needs have changed.
