How to apply

1. Read the 'Information for People Making Complaints' page at hrc.act.gov.au/complaints/information-for-people-making-complaints to understand the process.
2. Gather your details and the respondent's details (name, contact information), a description of what happened (when and where), and which protected attribute applies.
3. Click 'Make a Complaint' on the ACT HRC complaints page — this links to the ACT Government SmartForms online complaint portal.
4. Complete the online form in full, describing the events in your own words and specifying the type of complaint (discrimination, vilification, sexual harassment, human rights breach, etc.).
5. Submit the form electronically, or alternatively download and complete the form then email or post it to the Commission.
6. The Commission's intake team assesses your complaint and contacts you if more information is needed — phone (02) 6205 2222 or email human.rights@act.gov.au for assistance.
7. If accepted, the Commission contacts the respondent and provides them with a copy of your complaint.
8. The Commission facilitates conciliation between you and the respondent to seek a negotiated resolution.
9. If conciliation does not resolve the matter, the Commissioner may finalise the complaint or, for discrimination matters, you may be able to take the case to ACAT for a hearing.
