How to apply

1. Confirm eligibility: you must be in Australia, have arrived without a valid visa or be an unauthorised maritime arrival, engage Australia's protection obligations, and have no permanent visa.
2. Create an ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au and select the Subclass 790 Safe Haven Enterprise visa application.
3. Complete the application form, providing full personal details, immigration history, and the basis for your protection claims.
4. Upload supporting documents including identity documents (if available), any evidence supporting your protection claims, and details of family members to be included.
5. Pay the application charge of AUD $40 (one of the lowest visa charges — concession applies for humanitarian applicants) through ImmiAccount.
6. Attend any required interviews with the Department of Home Affairs and cooperate with identity and character checks.
7. If granted the SHEV, comply with visa conditions: you may be required to reside, work, or study in a SHEV regional area.
8. To access the SHEV pathway to other visas, work and/or study full-time in a SHEV regional area for a cumulative total of 42 months (3.5 years) without receiving certain social security payments.
9. After completing 42 months of qualifying regional work/study, you may apply for certain other visas (including some permanent visas) listed under the SHEV pathway on the Department of Home Affairs website.
