Mine Emergency Response Teams (MERT) are site-based emergency response teams at metalliferous and quarry operations — the equivalent of Mines Rescue Brigades for non-coal sites. MERT covers structural fire, vehicle accident extrication, hazmat, confined space rescue, vertical / rope rescue and casualty care. Most majors compete annually at AMERTC (Australian Mine Emergency Response Team Competition).
