How to apply
- Complete the Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training (TLI41225) for the vehicle class you intend to teach — mandatory across all five jurisdictions (heavy vehicle instructors in TAS/NT may require Certificate IV in Training and Assessment instead).
- Obtain a National Criminal History Check and, where required, a Working with Children / Vulnerable People registration (mandatory in ACT, TAS, SA).
- Arrange a commercial medical fitness assessment dated within 3 months of application.
- Hold a full open Australian driver licence for the relevant vehicle class for the minimum required continuous period (3 years in WA, TAS, and NT; check SA and ACT requirements on sa.gov.au and accesscanberra.act.gov.au respectively).
- WA: complete Form E175 (Application for Instructors Licence) in person at a DoT service centre and pass a theory and Practical Driving Assessment (PDA). SA: download and submit the Motor Driving Instructor (MDI) licence application from sa.gov.au with all supporting documents. TAS: attend a Service Tasmania office with Form MR111 (Ancillary Certificate in Driving Instruction Application Form), supporting documents, and payment. ACT: email completed ADI application form plus all attachments to audit.bookings@act.gov.au, attend an induction session, and pay the accreditation fee. NT: submit all documents (certificate, medical, criminal check, current licence) to a Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) office to obtain the 'D' (Driving Instructor) endorsement on your NT licence.
- Pay the applicable licence or accreditation fee at your jurisdiction's service centre or as directed.
- Receive your licence or endorsement — valid periods vary (5 years in NT; check each state for renewal cycle) — and renew with updated medical and check documents as required.
