How to apply

1. Confirm visa eligibility: AMEP is available to holders of most permanent migrant and humanitarian visas, certain temporary visas (e.g. certain partner visas), and eligible New Zealand citizens — check the full list at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/settling-in-australia/amep.
2. Use the AMEP provider locator on the Department of Home Affairs website (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/settling-in-australia/amep) or call the AMEP national line to find your nearest provider or online learning option.
3. Contact the provider to arrange an initial eligibility interview — interpreters are provided at no cost if needed.
4. Attend the eligibility interview and bring proof of identity (e.g. ImmiCard, passport) and your visa grant notification.
5. Undergo an initial language assessment conducted by the provider to determine your English level and appropriate class placement.
6. Complete the provider's enrolment paperwork (varies by provider; there is no single national AMEP enrolment form number).
7. Begin classes — options include full-time, part-time, evening, weekend, and online/distance; childcare assistance may be available through the program.
8. Continue until you reach a vocational level of English — there is no hour cap (the previous 510-hour limit was removed in 2021).
