An annual $4,000 bursary for Australians aged 12–25 who provide unpaid care to a family member or friend, to help them continue secondary or tertiary education.

How to apply

  1. Check eligibility: you must be aged 12–25, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, currently providing unpaid care to a family member or friend with a disability, medical condition, mental health issue, or frailty, and enrolled (or planning to enrol) in school, TAFE, university, or other recognised education.
  2. Confirm you are not already receiving another scholarship or bursary worth more than $500 in the same year, and do not already hold a bachelor's degree or higher.
  3. Download and read the Information Pack from youngcarersnetwork.com.au to understand the assessment criteria, evidence requirements, and payment conditions.
  4. When applications open (typically September–October each year), visit the online application portal at carers-australia-youngcarersbursar.my.site.com/s/ and create a new account or log into an existing one.
  5. Complete the online application, uploading evidence of: your caring role, your study enrolment or intent, age/identity (one document if aged 12–17; two documents if aged 18–25), and citizenship or permanent residency.
  6. Submit the application before the closing date and save your application reference number.
  7. Successful applicants are notified in mid-to-late December; the first $2,000 instalment is paid in January and the second $2,000 is paid in June (conditional on completing a mid-year survey and remaining eligible).
