How to apply
- Patient consults their GP and discusses symptoms; GP performs a comprehensive physical and mental health assessment to establish an eating disorder diagnosis.
- GP prepares the Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan (EDTMP) in a consultation of at least 20 minutes, claiming MBS Item 90250 (or 90252 if GP has mental health training).
- GP offers the patient a copy of the plan and records the patient's consent in the clinical notes.
- GP refers the patient to eligible psychologists or other allied health professionals who can claim the eating disorder psychological treatment items (MBS Items 90264–90265 and equivalents).
- Patient attends up to 40 psychological treatment sessions per 12-month period (and up to 20 dietetic sessions) under the plan.
- At the appropriate review interval, the GP reviews the plan and claims the relevant review MBS item (90251 or 90253) to extend or revise treatment.
- Patient claims Medicare rebates at Services Australia (via myGov or Medicare app) or the provider bulk-bills using the relevant MBS item numbers.
- A new plan cannot be created within 12 months of a previous plan claim — patients must wait the full 12-month period before a fresh EDTMP is prepared.
