How to apply

1. Identify your profession and the relevant National Board (e.g., Medical Board of Australia, Nursing and Midwifery Board, Pharmacy Board) — each sets profession-specific registration standards
2. Complete the online self-assessment or eligibility check on the AHPRA website to determine which registration pathway applies: Competent Authority Pathway (for practitioners from designated comparable countries), Standard Pathway (all others, includes examination requirements), or the Qualification-Based Registration pathway (for nurses from AHPRA-approved countries with 1,800+ hours practice since 2017)
3. For medical practitioners on the Standard Pathway, complete prerequisite assessments such as the AMC Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and AMC Clinical Examination administered by the Australian Medical Council before lodging the AHPRA application
4. Create an account in the AHPRA practitioner portal at ahpra.gov.au and begin your registration application, uploading certified copies of qualifications, identity documents, registration history from overseas regulatory bodies, English language proficiency evidence, and criminal history declarations
5. Pay the combined application fee and annual registration fee — amounts vary by profession and are set by each National Board for the 2025/26 financial year; check your profession's National Board website for the current fee schedule
6. Submit the application and await AHPRA's initial review (within approximately 30 days) and full assessment (typically 4–6 weeks; up to 6 weeks for complex applications)
7. Respond promptly to any requests for additional documentation or information from AHPRA during the assessment period
8. Upon approval, obtain the relevant registration type (provisional, general, or specialist) — provisional registration requires completion of supervised practice in an approved position before general registration is granted
9. Use your AHPRA registration certificate as supporting evidence when applying for a skilled migration visa through ImmiAccount (e.g., Subclass 482 TSS, 189, 190)
